In 1993 Marc Andreessen, a student at the University of Illinois, created Mosaic, a Web browser that could display graphics and text. This was the first web browser that used a GUI, or graphical user interface and allowed you to easily access Web pages.

In 1994 Marc Andreesen later became on of the founders of Netscape. This company released their Netscape Navigator Web browser. Microsoft then developed their Web browser, Internet Explorer.

The GUI of the Web browsers makes it easier and more fun to view Web pages and explore the Internet. This has greatly contributed to the explosive growth of the Internet.
